Disney's 81 Holes of Golf!

Walt Disney World has four 18 hole courses and one 9 hole course on the property. Two great 18 hole architects, Joe Lee and Tom Fazio, will present you with various challenges in design and course strategy on championship caliber courses. Combined with Disney's world renowned level of service, you will have a great experience playing these courses, whether staying at a Walt Disney World resort on vacation or for a business trip in the area.

The three Joe Lee courses (the Magnolia, Palm and Lake Buena Vista) harken to the original days of Walt Disney World and more traditional Florida golf course design. The Palm and Magnolia courses host the annual PGA Tour professional event in the fall of each year.

The Tom Fazio designed Osprey Ridge course brings an updated approach to course design with interesting challenges and elevations in the midst of the more remote parts of the Walt Disney World property.

The nine hole Oak Trail walking course, designed by Ron Garl, provides a unique opportunity for younger or less experienced players to enjoy a round of golf, with a mix of par 3's, 4's and 5's. It's great for a family golfing experience with young kids!

Golf, Golf Digest, Conde Nast Traveler and Travel and Leisure Golf magazines have consistently rated the Walt Disney World Resort as one of the top golf resorts in the United States, with additional awards recognizing Disney's "Family Friendly" environment for family golfing experiences.

On course food and beverage cart service is available and GPS yardage system equipped carts are available on the 18 hole courses. Rental clubs and shoes are available at each of the courses, if you are traveling light and/or make a last minute decision to play. Practice ranges and greens are available for pre-round warmups and lessons are also available from Disney's PGA of America Professionals.

If you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort Hotel, you can book your tee times up to 90 days in advance and can utilize free taxi service to and from the courses. Others can book up to 60 days in advance.

Disney's golf courses have also been certified as part of the Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary Golf Program.

Disney announces partnership with Four Seasons

for a new luxury resort and golf course community!

March 1, 2007: Walt Disney World has announced plans for a new luxury golf resort
and community in partnership with Four Seasons. The resort/community will be on a 900
acre site at Bonnet Creek that will include a luxury hotel along with single family
and timeshare homes.

Construction will take place in phases and the new resort is expected to open in 2010.

NOTE: As of August 1, 2007, the Eagle Pines golf course is closed permanently as a
consequence of the above developments.

UPDATE April 9, 2009: During our recent stay at WDW, I spoke with a few golf Cast Members and got similar information, so I am posting it here, albeit as "rumor" and nothing confirmed by Disney. So keep that in mind. It should be noted that based upon calls to both the Reedy Creek Improvement District (Walt Disney World's governmental body) and Four Seasons corporate offices, the official statements do not deviate from prior information, which is that the full transition of the Osprey Ridge course from Disney to Four Seasons is still on track for 2010 and that the Osprey Ridge course will stay open beyond that. No statements from either entity provided insight into longer term plans, using wording to indicate that all plans are subject to change until publicly announced.

Based upon the Cast Member information, it was suggested that the timetable for changes with respect to the Osprey Ridge course has been delayed for two years until perhaps 2012. This is due to the current recession. Even though the land upon which the courses sit is now owned by Four Seasons, Disney retains management rights to the golf facilities during a transitionary time period. The construction on the Four Seasons resort and associated facilities does continue. From what we could see on the bus on Vista Blvd, the holes from Eagle Pines that were along the road have been torn up and are staked for new construction. It was also suggested that the plans for Osprey Ridge may entail some combination of holes from Osprey Ridge and Eagle Pines to enable a more traditional course layout and land use. This would deviate substantially from the current land development plans, which are public documents, so bear that in mind. What is also not clear are any parameters around Disney World Guest access to Osprey relative to longer advanced reservations for tee times or reduced green fees.

That all being said, best case, Osprey will be around for some time to come. Worst case, if you are planning to play Osprey Ridge, I would do it sooner than later, as you never know and the near future recessionary economic conditions may very well impact future plans for the entire Four Seasons development, which could impact plans for the golf course.

As more information should become available, I will post here.

"I dream, I test my dreams against my beliefs,
I dare to take risks, and I execute my vision
to make those dreams come true."

- Walt Disney (1901 - 1966)

If we can dream it, then we can do it,
yes we can, (yes we can.)

If we can dream it, then we can do it,
yes we can, (yes we can.)

Have you ever looked beyond today, into the future?
Picture you're in a world, we've yet to see.
The wonder of finding new ways,
that lead to the promise of brighter days.

Have you ever dreamed the dreams of the children?
Just imagine the magic, their minds can see. (if we can dream it).
Horizons, all shining and new, (shining and new).
Horizons, where dreams do come true (they do come true).

And it will be, a future filled with care.
For you and me, a world we all can share.
For today holds the challenge to make this world a better place to be.
New Horizons, for you and for me.

Lee Cockerell

"It's not the magic that makes it work, it's the way we work that makes it magic"

I have read quite a few business books, including several specifically about Disney's
approach to business and leadership. Lee Cockerell's 2008 book is by far the best and
should be required reading for anyone looking to improve their leadership skills and to
bring the Disney sense of Magic to any organizational environment.
